Fellows primarily interested in an academic career may elect to spend over 50% of their activities in the realm of research (clinical or basic). Fellows interested in the clinical practice of Endocrinology and Diabetes continue to nurture their expertise and skills in predominantly clinically oriented activities. The second year of fellowship is more loosely structured, permitting fellows to spend varying amounts of their time in both clinical and research activities. The fellow works closely with the attending faculty and will develop skills in the synthesis, interpretation, and application of clinical and laboratory information. This clinical exposure involves both hospitalized and clinic patients. The first year is organized to provide intensive exposure to clinical patient care of adult and pediatric endocrine and metabolic disorders. The goal of all of our educational programs is to provide highly motivated fellows with the best possible clinical and research training and to prepare them for long-term careers in academic medicine. They will be capable of dealing in depth with the diagnostic and management problems innate to Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, whether their anticipated future career be in clinical practice or academic medicine. The objective of this program is to produce graduate physicians eligible for certification in Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes by the American Board of Internal Medicine. The program has sufficient flexibility to accommodate the wide variety of needs, goals and interests of each trainee. The Fellowship Program in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the University of Missouri School of Medicine consists of a two-year training program designed to provide advanced and comprehensive educational opportunities to physicians in the clinical and investigative aspects of the subspecialty.
